Silly Season or Safe Season?

Why Now is the Time to Revisit Your AOD and Wellbeing Policies

As National Safe Work Month wraps up, workplaces across Australia are turning their attention to the end of the year. The November and December period is often called the "silly season" for a reason.
The pace picks up, stress levels rise, and the calendar fills with Christmas parties, client functions and social events. It is a time to celebrate, but it can also be a time of increased risk for workplaces.

A New Legislative Lens: Psychosocial Hazards

Mental Health Matters

From 1 December, new psychosocial and psychological hazard legislation comes into effect in Victoria. This legislation highlights the growing focus on mental health as part of workplace safety. It is not just about physical hazards anymore. Workplaces are expected to identify, manage and mitigate risks that could affect an employee’s psychological wellbeing.

The timing could not be more relevant. The festive season can bring extra pressure both at work and at home. For many employees, it can be a tough period financially, emotionally, and socially. For those in customer-facing roles, it can also mean longer hours, increased workloads and sometimes challenging interactions.

Why Reviewing Your AOD Policy Matters

Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) policies are often overlooked until something goes wrong. The lead-up to Christmas is the ideal time to review your policy and make sure everyone understands it. This is not about being the fun police, it is about keeping people safe and setting clear expectations.

A good AOD policy should:

  • Reflect current best practice and legal requirements
  • Outline clear expectations for workplace functions and after-hours behaviour
  • Provide guidance for managers on how to handle potential issues
  • Emphasise wellbeing and support, not punishment

(Yes, we can help with all of the above)

Supporting Mental Health During the Festive Season

The silly season is not just about managing risk, it is also about supporting people. Remind your team of the employee support pathways that are available, such as Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), wellbeing resources, or mental health first aid contacts.

Think creatively about how your workplace can support staff through what can be a high-stress time. For example:
